Fotini Gouseti The work of Greek artist Fotini Gouseti questions the limitations and boundaries that exist within society. She starts with the belief that what is considered beautiful, right or moral is determined by transitional conditions such as time and space. Today's standards were perceived differently 50 years ago and they will be redefined in the future. In a similar sense what is acceptable here may be ill founded in another place on the globe. Her work emphasizes and comments on the fear of the uncertain, the undefined, which gives birth and sustains the dominant rules. Focusing on this fear is an element of major importance in Gouseti's practice because in her view fear leads to constructed boundaries, identities, normalities and roles. As a means of 'taming' the fear Gouseti follows a meticulous time engagement scheme. Repetition, obsession, compulsion and devotion are recurring elements in her practice, and manifest themselves in both form and content. She often refers to genitalia sketching the familiarity of intimacy and yet alienating this familiarity through repetitive recording of this part of the body as an autonomous existence. Through its compulsive nature her process suggests a manifestation of proof: attempting to change the way of perceiving the world through first changing the self. As Gouseti puts it, the self becomes a shaman of one's own self.

Efrat Zehavi Efrat Zehavi: "I am a sculptress that needs a steady place. However, I have a migrating studio with which I can work everywhere. For the Migrate Studio I don't need to carry much: a few packages of colorful modeling-clay and a digital camera. In every new location, I invite passers -by to sit with me for a short while, to converse and to be portrayed in the soft modeling-clay. Every time I bring up a new subject for conversation. During the conversation, I try to get acquainted with my sitters, and to reveal something about their identity, opinions and beliefs. The conversation is part and parcel of the experience, and it makes the sitters to become an active element of the performance. The modeling-clay is a fragile material; it cannot be baked or hardened, and it is difficult to protect from damage. Therefore, for the documentation, I photograph the portraits, always from different angles: profile left, front, profile right. The result of such a session, after around an hour, is a passport like photo, a registration of a face with an unique expression. Later on I send the digital photo and a quote of one sentence from the conversation to the e-mail address of the portrayed person. This is the only tangible evidence of our encounter." |

Heleen Schröder Heleen Schröder's artistic practice centres on personal drawings and translating them into public forms. By virtue of its informal intimacy and spontaneous directness, the sketchbook is her ideal medium. To draw and make notes are for her ways of looking at and understanding the world – and she aims to retain this immediacy in work made for exhibition. The search for a means to translate the private expression of the sketchbook page into public forms remains an engaging artistic challenge. She exhibits regularly in the Netherlands and South Africa, with work ranging from pencil or ink drawings, watercoours, acrylics, and various graphic media to artist's books and, most recently, ceramic tablets. Regardless of the medium, and whether handling a brush or a stylus, she regards the resulting work as drawing rather than painting. |
